Brenham Ice Cream Festival

This coming Saturday we're going to join the Secondwind Ministry at their annual day trip to the Brenham Ice Cream Festival.  This will be the third year we've gone and are really looking forward to it.  Lot's of vendors, food, entertainment (Elvis shows us every year to perform...but looks like he'd had a bit too much ice cream, thought).  It's one of our favorite events...usually great spring weather...enjoyable food & ice cream...and even better fellowship.   Although Seconwind is our "pre-retirement age/baby-boomer" ministry, anyone is welcome to join on Saturday.  I believe a caravan will be departing from FLAG at 9 a.m.   Hope to see ya' there!

"A Love Letter to Oprah"

James Robison is a highly respected veteran evangelist and world relief missionary that my wife and I admire greatly.  When I lived in Dallas years ago, I had the privilege of sitting in the audience during a live taping of one of his TV talk show programs.

Recently he wrote an "open letter" to Oprah that is sincere, and motivated by genuine love and concern for her.  It is a "must read', and a wonderful example of how to be Christlike when addressing those that are spiritually blind.

Special thanks to Erin Rothchild for letting me know about this letter.

Texas-sized "godzilla" mosquitos

It certainly seems that Katy has been infiltrated by zillions of "love bugs".  They are everywhere.  Each time I stopped at a light while driving this weekend, my car would be surrounded by legions of these things. There ain't nothing "lovable" about these pests.  And while I'm at it, after this annual plague has runned it's course, most probably they'll be replaced by Texas-size "godzilla" mosquitos. For some reason, these things like my blood more than most folks.  Even when I spray on the most potent mosquito repellent (the one with the max "DT" ingredient used by hunters in swamplands), they still bite me...through my denim jeans.  No kidding!

OK...just had to get it out of my system before starting my week.  So glad that I can take even this to the Lord in prayer.

This morning, Ronny Granberry was our guest speaker...

This morning, Ronny Granberry was our guest speaker, and oh, what powerful ministry we were blessed with!  Ronny has been a dear friend of mine ever since we met about 6 years ago.  That's when he and his wife, Tammy, dropped by a morning service at the church we were pastoring in Crockett (his family owns a nearby farm they go to escape the pressures of city life).  It's amazing, but as soon as we met I sensed a kindred spirit and knew we would become friends. Since then, we've been known to "preach to each other" over the phone for hours, encouraging one another to "fight the good fight".

After today's service, we went over to Saltgrass and continued our fellowship.  His 18 year old son, Aaron, came along.  At first I hardly recognized Aaron because he'd grown so tall (6' 5").  I asked him if his parents were feeding him "Miracle Grow"!   Well, it's my turn to go over Ronny Granberry's "neck of the woods" and return the visit.  I'm anxious to tour the new facilities of the church that his twin brother, Donny, pastors in Pasadena in order to get some ideas for our future new building.

It's wonderful to be part of the family of God!

Hey, not all "flakes" are useless!

My wife and I found a great place to get Texas pecans.  We use pecans all year long for various recipes.  Pecans can be a bit pricey, but sure worth it.  This particular vendor, Millican Pecan Company, not only sells incredible pecans, but also "pecan meal".  Basically, it's the flakes "leftovers" from chopped pecans.  Great price.  We use it to sprinkle over salads, oatmeal, and even ice cream.  Combined with pie crust, it really adds a wonderful flavor.  Hey, not all "flakes" are useless!

Interesting people-watching in Central Park

It's amazing how my life has drastically changed since moving from NYC to Texas almost 18 years ago.  For instance, if bored I would simply hop on the #6 subway train and whisk down to Manhattan to window-shop on 5th Ave or do some interesting people-watching in Central Park, across the street from The Plaza Hotel.  Perhaps I would grab a delicious hotdog from a street vendor (saurkraut and mustard).  Now if I'm bored, I'll might go for a drive in the country in search of bluebonnets, and perhaps swing by a Whataburger to eat something.  People-watching?  The mall.

For some reason it's just not the same.   ;-)

'Nuff said!

Wow...I'm getting a lot of positive comments about the recent post, "Hold on to your wigs!".    For those that haven't seen the clip, the last 2 minutes of the presentation is awesome.  It's amazing how God has left behind His "fingerprints" in creation, including mankind.  'Nuff said!

Hold on to your wigs!

This clip was sent to me by Morla Walker.  It's 8:44 minutes long...really worth watching.  The last 2 minutes of it will BLOW YOU AWAY...so hold on to your wigs!

Our salad and chicken was generous...

The meal that we enjoyed at the youth cafe tonight was excellent!  Our salad with chicken was generous and tasty.   My little boy had the small pizza.  It was a youthful and pleasant ambiance.  There seem to be quite a number of adults there as well.  It was really nice not to worry about preparing dinner, cleaning afterwards and rushing to church this Wednesday.  We'll definitely be back as a family.

"Healthy" banana split

We're planning to eat dinner at the Crossculture Youth Cafe this evening.  Every Wednesday from 6-7pm they offer a nice menu of food items at a very reasonable price.   As I understand, our youth actually prefer "healthy" food (we have the BEST kids!).  The main course tonight is "Chicken & Greens".  I'll report later on how it went.  Wonder of they serve a "healthy" banana split?  ;-)
